What are you doing this evening?
After a busy day of navigating work, my evening will start with that satisfying feeling of closing the laptop and transitioning into family mode. Once I’m done with work, the kitchen becomes my domain, where I’ll be preparing dinner for the family. Cooking, for me, is more than just a task—it’s a moment to unwind and create something that brings everyone together. There’s something about the sound of chopping, the aroma of spices, and the warmth of the stove that signals the end of a workday and the beginning of quality time with the people who matter most.
Dinner is always the focal point of our evenings. It’s when we gather as a family and have those important check-ins. My daughter will share how things are going at college, my youngest will talk about her school day, and my wife and I will chat about how work’s been for each of us. These conversations, though seemingly simple, are what ground me after a day filled with numbers, deadlines, and responsibilities. It’s where we laugh, share, and sometimes just enjoy a comfortable silence, appreciating the presence of each other.
After dinner, I’ll find some time to relax with a bit of TV—something light like YouTube that doesn’t demand much brainpower—just enough to unwind. Then, a nice, long, relaxing bath is on the agenda, a moment to pause and let the stress of the day dissolve.
Finally, I’ll get into bed, the day having reached its calmest point. Depending on how I feel, I might either grab a book for some light reading or take out my notebook and do a bit of writing. I find that writing at the end of the day helps organise the thoughts still swirling in my mind. It’s almost like a mental detox before sleep, a way to clear my head, and sometimes I find that the best thoughts or ideas come to me in those quiet moments.
And then, it’s time for rest. The perfect end to a day of balancing work, family, and a bit of personal time—ready to do it all again tomorrow.
