Name the professional athletes you respect the most and why.
For me, Eric Cantona was the epitome of an athlete. He embodied everything I admire in a sportsman. He was a maverick—determined, skilful, and unpredictable. On his day, he was simply unplayable, almost magical. Watching him play was like witnessing poetry in motion. You didn’t just watch the game for the team or the result; you watched it to see how Cantona moved, how he found spaces that no one else saw, and how he played passes with extraordinary control and vision.
What made him even more relatable to me was his deep sense of justice. He couldn’t stand being wronged, and he detested injustice. While he didn’t always fight back in the “right” way, that raw, uncompromising passion resonated with my own character. I saw a bit of myself in him—a man who felt deeply and acted boldly, even if it meant crossing lines others wouldn’t dare to.
Even now, years after his retirement, I find myself still captivated by him. I listen to his interviews, watch old footage, and read articles about his legacy. Eric Cantona may no longer be on the field, but his spirit, his philosophy, and his defiance remain. He wasn’t just a footballer; he was an artist, a poet, a family man, and a role model who continues to inspire me.
Thank you, Mr. Cantona, for all the memories.
