Who are the biggest influences in your life?
There comes a point in life where you realise that the concept of “influence” changes. For me, I’m at an age now where there are no influencers in my life. Not in the way there used to be. I’ve been influenced in the past, shaped by those around me, by circumstances, and by my own choices. But now? I’ve become who I’ve become. I’m not influenced anymore—not by trends, opinions, or even the well-meaning advice of others. I’m comfortable in my skin, and for me, that’s a kind of freedom.
But if I had to name the greatest influencer anyone could ever have, my answer is simple: Muhammad ﷺ. His life, his teachings, and his example transcend time, culture, and circumstance. If I’m to follow anyone now, it’s him. That’s my aim, my focus. And it’s a lifelong journey, not something that can be rushed or completed in a single moment of clarity.
Now, if the question was, “Who were the biggest influences in your life?” the answer would be different. That’s a story worth telling.
Running from the Mirror
When I was younger, I spent a lot of time trying not to be like my dad. It was almost a mission, one of those silent goals that we carry without truly understanding them. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve realised that I was probably running from myself. The truth is, we inherit more than just physical traits from our parents—we carry parts of their essence, their struggles, and even their strengths. And today, I’m at peace with the parts of me that came from him. In fact, I’m proud of them.
My Mother, the Storyteller
If there’s one person who stands out as a cornerstone of my upbringing, it’s my mum. Her stories, her wisdom, and the way she tried to instil goodness in me are things I’ll always treasure. She had a way of explaining life that made even the toughest lessons easier to digest. Her voice, her presence—it’s the kind of influence that never leaves you, even when you think you’ve outgrown it.
A Brother-in-Law Who Saved Me
There was a time in my life when I needed saving. And one of my brother-in-laws stepped up in a way that I will never forget. He didn’t just help me—he gave me perspective, support, and a chance to find my feet again. It’s funny how sometimes the people you least expect become your anchor during the storms of life.
The Family That Kept Me Grounded
My mum’s elder sister and her family—my cousins—were like a second home for me. They were always there, present and steady, offering a kind of grounding that you can’t buy or borrow. They kept me humble, reminded me of where I came from, and showed me the beauty of simply being there for one another.
The Determination Within
If I had to pinpoint the most consistent influence in my life, it would be determination. That quiet, stubborn voice inside me that says, “Get up. Keep going.” It’s not something you learn overnight; it’s built through hardship, mistakes, and the will to do better. And for me, it’s been a constant companion.
Writing the Truth
When I finally sit down to write the book I’ve been dreaming of—The Narratives—I think many of these influences will come to life on the page. Writing has a way of making things clearer, of untangling the threads of your life so you can see the pattern. I don’t know when that book will be finished, but I do know it will be honest.
In the end, our influences are a mosaic of people, experiences, and lessons. They shape us in ways we can’t always see at the time. And while I’ve outgrown the need to be influenced by anyone now, I’ll always carry those who shaped me in my heart. After all, they’re part of the story, and the story is still being written.
