Threads That Hold the Universe Together

By Mohamed Miah

Sometimes, the more we look at the world around us, the more we realise how much of it we can’t see. Gravity, dark matter, consciousness—these invisible forces bind existence together in ways that feel miraculous, and yet, they happen so effortlessly that we don’t even notice.

It’s like zooming into the smallest details of creation. Atoms, protons, neutrinos—these tiny building blocks carry out their jobs in perfect harmony. Then, when you zoom out, there’s this endless universe, constantly expanding, stretching into a space that has no edge. And at every level—seen or unseen—everything obeys the will of the Creator, Allah. It’s humbling when you stop to think about it.

Gravity: The Glue You Can’t See

We take gravity for granted. We walk around, drop things, and assume they’ll fall to the ground. But if you really think about it, gravity is one of the greatest mysteries of creation. It’s invisible. You can’t hold it or measure it directly, but it keeps planets in their orbits, the moon tied to the Earth, and our feet planted firmly on the ground.

Why does mass attract mass? Science tells us how it works, but not why. And then there’s dark matter—the hidden force holding galaxies together, a substance we can’t see or touch but know exists because of its effects.

It’s effortless for Allah to create this balance, yet without it, the universe would collapse.

“It is Allah who holds the heavens and the earth so that they do not cease.” (Qur’an 35:41)

Atoms and the Hidden Design

If you zoom into creation, things get even more interesting. Atoms are everywhere, but they’re so small we can’t see them. Inside each atom are protons, neutrons, and electrons, perfectly arranged. The forces holding them together—like the strong nuclear force—are so precise that if they were even slightly weaker or stronger, the world as we know it wouldn’t exist.

And then there are neutrinos—particles so small and elusive that trillions of them pass through your body every second without you feeling a thing. They’re invisible, yet they’re part of the balance Allah has created.

It’s all so intricate, so detailed, that the deeper we look, the clearer it becomes: there’s no chaos here.

“And not even the weight of a speck of dust escapes His knowledge.” (Qur’an 34:3)

The Universe Is Still Expanding

Now zoom out. The universe isn’t sitting still—it’s expanding, stretching farther and farther into a space we’ll never fully comprehend. Scientists can’t explain why it’s happening or what lies beyond what we can see, but the Qur’an told us this centuries ago:

“And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.” (Qur’an 51:47)

No matter how far we zoom out, there’s no end. Just more creation. It’s a reminder of Allah’s infinite power—that no matter how far we look, we’ll always come up short.

Consciousness: The Invisible Life Within Us All

One of the most beautiful mysteries of creation is consciousness—the awareness shared by all living things. Plants turn toward sunlight, animals move with instinct and purpose, and even the stars, in their fixed paths, submit to Allah’s will.

It’s not just humans who are conscious; it’s all of creation. But Allah has given us something more: the ability to understand and choose. We can reflect on these signs, ask questions about life, and recognise the One who created it all.

“And there is not a thing except that it exalts Allah by His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting.” (Qur’an 17:44)

Consciousness, like gravity or dark matter, cannot be seen or measured. It exists, yet it remains unseen—another miracle we often overlook.

The Seen, the Unseen, and Everything in Between

Allah’s creation doesn’t stop at what we can see. Life exists in forms we know and in forms we don’t:

• Creatures in the depths of the ocean, hidden in darkness.

• Beings like the angels and the jinn, carrying out their roles unseen.

• Even the bacteria and viruses too small for us to notice, yet essential for life.

“And He creates that which you do not know.” (Qur’an 16:8)

Everything is alive, everything has a role, and everything glorifies Allah in its own way.

A Universe Full of Signs

What holds the universe together isn’t just gravity or dark matter—it’s the will of Allah. The forces we can’t see, the smallest details of life, and the expanding cosmos are all signs for those who pause to reflect.

We are part of this balance, part of creation. The more we look—whether we zoom in or zoom out—the clearer it becomes that nothing exists without purpose.

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, are signs for those of understanding.” (Qur’an 3:190)

There’s so much we don’t know, and yet what we do know is enough to leave us in awe. From the invisible forces holding atoms together to the vast universe stretching beyond our reach, everything whispers the same truth: it’s all part of a design we cannot fully grasp.

And that’s the beauty of it. The unseen, the seen, and everything in between—all of it is a reminder of the One who created it.

SubhanAllah, how can we not reflect?
