Feasting & Togetherness

Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

When it comes to the holidays, I believe the best moments are made in the kitchen and shared around the table. There’s something magical about the smells wafting through the house, the sound of laughter (and occasional bickering!) in the background, and the comforting sight of loved ones gathering to enjoy the fruits of our labour. In our home, the holidays are a time to indulge in food that’s not just delicious but steeped in tradition, love, and a touch of individuality.

For me, the highlight of any holiday feast is my leg of lamb. I marinate it for a good three or four days, letting the flavours really sink in—garlic, herbs, spices, all coming together in perfect harmony. The lamb gets a slow roast in the oven, and just when you think it couldn’t get better, it’s finished off over a crackling BBQ fire. The result? Smoky, tender, flavour-packed meat that pairs perfectly with a fresh salad and a hearty serving of rice and peas. For dessert, there’s almost always a decadent chocolate cake—rich, indulgent, and the perfect ending to a spectacular meal.

My mum also has a way of stealing the culinary spotlight with her chicken korma. Creamy, fragrant, and full of soul, it’s the kind of dish that brings everyone to the table without fail. My wife, on the other hand, has mastered a milk dessert with delicate semolina balls that feels like a warm hug in a bowl. It’s sweet, subtle, and absolutely spectacular.

What I love most about these holiday meals isn’t just the food—it’s the people. There’s something so beautiful about the way food brings us together, even when we don’t always see eye to eye. Families are made up of individuals, each with their own quirks and opinions, but when we sit down to share a meal, those differences can take a back seat, even if just for a moment. The holidays remind us that what makes us unique is also what makes us stronger, and there’s a quiet reward in coming together despite our differences.

At the end of the day, it’s not just about the dishes on the table, though they’re undeniably amazing. It’s about the love that goes into preparing them, the stories shared over them, and the memories created with every bite. Because when you have good food and family, you have everything you need for a truly special holiday.
