A Night Owl’s Dream

If you didn’t need sleep, what would you do with all the extra time?

Have you ever wondered what you’d do with all the extra hours if sleep wasn’t necessary? For me, it’s an idea that sparks an endless to-do list—but not the mundane kind filled with chores or work obligations. It’s more about indulging in the passions and pursuits that often take a backseat to the hustle and bustle of life.

First and foremost, I’d read. I mean really read. My ever-growing to-read list is like a mountain, one I’ve been climbing slowly for years. With no need for sleep, I could finally conquer it. There’s something beautiful about sinking into a book, whether it’s fiction that transports you to another world or non-fiction that feeds your mind with fresh ideas. There are entire subjects I want to dive into—philosophy, history, Islamic theology, technology—and I’d have the luxury of time to truly immerse myself.

Then, there are podcasts. You know the ones you download and swear you’ll listen to, only to see them pile up in your library? I’d binge through them, soaking up discussions on everything from current affairs to niche topics like sneaker culture or the latest in AI. It’s like having conversations with the world’s greatest minds, but on your own schedule.

With the extra hours, I’d also tackle those nagging DIY projects I keep putting off. The thought of paying someone else to fix a door or hang a shelf always feels a bit wasteful when I know I could do it myself—if only I had the time. In a sleep-free world, I’d finally roll up my sleeves, take on these small projects.

And let’s not forget exercise. Right now, finding time for consistent workouts or long, reflective walks feels like a luxury. But with 24 hours at my disposal, I’d lace up my trainers and hit the pavement more often. Exercise isn’t just good for the body—it’s the perfect opportunity to clear the mind and gain perspective.

But reading remains my top priority. No deadlines, no pressure, just pure curiosity.

In truth, the idea of a sleepless existence feels both exciting and daunting. Would it give us more time to live, or just more time to fill? For me, it’s less about doing everything and more about doing the things that truly matter—the things that often get set aside when life feels too busy. What would you do with all those extra hours? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
