Embracing the Joy of an Animal Companion

What is good about having a pet?

Ginger – My Ginger Cat

When we talk about “having a pet,” we’re often missing the bigger picture. These are not just animals meant for our amusement. They are living, breathing beings with their own personalities, emotions, and needs. And as soon as we start thinking of them as more than just pets—as companions, in every sense—the bond we create is unlike anything else.

Whether it’s a cat or dog, a rabbit, or even a fish or reptile, these creatures rely on us in profound ways. Caring for an animal is almost like caring for a child, in that we are fully responsible for their wellbeing. We ensure they’re comfortable, safe, and that their habitat suits their unique needs. Feeding, cleaning, and providing comfort become part of our everyday routine, and in return, they give us something even deeper: connection, loyalty, and unconditional affection.

Take my own companion, for example—a wonderfully stubborn cat named Ginger. Ginger isn’t just a pet; he’s family. With his wild mix of toughness and sensitivity, he reminds me a bit of myself. When I leave for a few days and come back, he makes sure I know he missed me, immediately claiming my lap and demanding all my attention, as if to say, “You’re not going anywhere now.” And in that moment, I realise just how much of a brat he can be—and how much I love it.

Ginger has a unique way of bringing the whole family together. We laugh and talk about his antics, his quirks, and yes, his moods, which are on his terms only. He’ll allow cuddles, but only if he’s in the mood. The kids get his approval when they come home from school, and he’ll check on each of them as if to make sure all is well. Once everyone is settled, he’s happy, and he’ll snooze… until the 3 a.m. hunger strikes. Then, it’s me he wakes, making his presence known by perching right on my chest until I get up to feed him. No one else—just me. And honestly, I wouldn’t change that for the world.

Having an animal companion can be so rewarding when we truly appreciate the relationship. They give us so much—companionship, routine, laughter, and yes, a bit of chaos, especially at 3 a.m. But in the end, they’re worth every early wake-up call. They’re worth every meal and every mess we clean up, because they remind us what it is to care and to love without asking for anything in return (well, aside from that snack in the middle of the night). And if you ask me, that’s what makes having an animal companion so incredibly special.
