Faith, Family, and Festivity

How do you celebrate holidays?

Holidays have always been about more than just a break from the daily grind. For me, they are about connecting deeply with my faith and those closest to me. As a Muslim, my main celebrations revolve around Ramadan and the two Eids, but I also take advantage of English bank holidays to create more moments with my family. Here’s how I embrace the spirit of these holidays and what they mean to me.

Ramadan: A Journey of Self-Discipline and Spiritual Growth

Ramadan, for me, is much more than just fasting. It’s a time to reflect, to slow down, and to truly reconnect with my faith. Every day during this sacred month, I work on becoming a better version of myself. I see it as a training ground, where I not only refrain from eating and drinking but also from negative thoughts and actions. It’s about cleansing both body and mind.

Ramadan allows me to be more self-aware and mindful of the world around me—especially those who don’t have the luxuries we often take for granted. I focus on charity, patience, and empathy. It’s an opportunity to shed bad habits and come out the other side with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper connection to God.

Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha: Family, Food, and Festivity

When Ramadan ends, it’s time to celebrate! Eid al-Fitr marks the end of fasting and brings with it a joyous atmosphere. We gather with family and friends, exchanging “Eid Mubarak” greetings, sharing delicious meals, and enjoying each other’s company. It’s a day filled with laughter, warmth, and appreciation for the blessings we have.

Eid al-Adha, the second major Islamic celebration, centers around sacrifice and gratitude. It’s a reminder of the values of generosity and humility. Again, it’s an opportunity to spend time with loved ones, to connect with our community, and to reflect on what truly matters in life.

English Bank Holidays: Cherishing Time with Family

While Ramadan and Eid are the spiritual highlights of the year for me, I also enjoy the bank holidays that come with living in the UK. These days are a great chance to relax and catch up on quality time with my family. Whether it’s going for a walk in the park, having a barbecue, or just lounging at home, I treasure these moments of togetherness.

In a busy world, these holidays provide a much-needed pause. They give me a chance to step back from the rush of everyday life and simply enjoy being present with my loved ones.

Finding Balance in Every Holiday

For me, holidays are about striking a balance—between faith and festivity, spirituality and relaxation, reflection and celebration. Whether it’s the spiritual cleansing of Ramadan, the joy of celebrating Eid with family and friends, or the simplicity of spending time during bank holidays, each occasion holds a special place in my heart. It’s all about reconnecting with what’s truly important: faith, family, and the moments we share together.
